SUN LAKES ROTARY BOARD MEETING

August 17, 2010

Present were: Frank Wiley, Acting President, Norm Noble, President (via Skpe), Past President Morris Johnson, John Lenher, Treasurer, Carolyn Farnsworth, Secretary, Vice President Nick Nicholas, Directors Dwight Snyder, Dee Rasmussen, Dwight Grotewold, and guests Don Prestin and Lee Widener.

Secretary’s Report:  It was moved and seconded that the minutes of the June 15, 2010, board meeting be approved.  Motion carried unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report:   A Financial Report for the month of August, 2010, was presented.  .

New Business:  Norm proposed that the Bylaws, Section III, Article 6 be amended to provide for a $20.00 fee for transferring Rotarians.  This amendment requires approval from the membership.  Discussion was held on transferring member costs.  It was decided to table this until next month, and that it be discussed at several meetings to get input from the members.

Frank said he had an update from Art Sloan regarding the needs of homeless Veterans.  He is in need of clothing, but no dollar amount was given.  Morris moved that a donation of $500.00 be given to Art Sloan for clothing for homeless Veterans.  The motion was seconded and carried.  It was also moved that a donation be made to Umom Walk for $1,000.00 and Desert Sounds for $1,000.00.  Motion carried unanimously.  John was asked to verify how much money is available from the Foundation.  It was requested that a Foundation balance be on our Financial Report each month.  John commented that the club’s CD was rolled over this month.

Frank reported that he had contacted Ocotillo about next year’s Golf Tournament.  They have agreed to have coffee and two buffet lines.

Foundation:  Dwight reported on a Simplified Grant to furnish a washer and dryer for a Clothing Shop – the District committee will approve this grant for $1,000.00.  We will have to come up with a smaller match for this.  For the Zimbabwe matching grant, $2,000.00 was sent to the District and was matched by the District, making $4,000 available for a sanitation system.

Gary Whiting has suggested the club participate in a reverse grant with another club, and try to raise $10,000.00 for the Gift of Life.  Several concerns were raised, such as the amount we have already given this year and also the fact that $10,000.00 only helps one child, where that amount may help many under other grants.  It was moved and seconded that we are  promising to use $2,000.00 out of the $8,000.00 already given for this grant.  Motion carried unanimously.
