The SLRC held its January 20 meeting at the United Methodist Outreach Ministries (UMOM), New Day Center. The New Day Center is the largest homeless shelter for families in the State if Arizona. Currently on the campus are over 350 homeless persons and over 220 of the total are children. While at the shelter, clients are provided food, clothing, shelter, medical services, counseling, job training, child care, and educational opportunities. The New Day Center has been supported by the SLRC for the past eight years both financially and by volunteer activities. As a Rotary Centennial Project, SLRC has provided funding and volunteers to provide a room at the shelter for infant care. Prior to the club meeting on January 20, a plaque was placed in the new infant care room honoring the SLRC and its Centennial Project, and also memorializing Past District Governor Bill Decker, and his widow, Rotarian Anne Decker, who funded all the cribs and other contents of the nursery. A breakfast of eggs, bacon, ham, pancakes, and muffins was served to a group of fifty plus Rotarians and spouses after which UMOM CEO Darlene Newsome explained how UMOM programs break the cycle of homelessness and bring hope to hundreds of children.
